WEDDING of MARTHA MELVINA BROOKER and MATTHEW CULP

From The Express', Volume 1, Number 27, November 13, 1895.

The residence of Mr. Wm. Brooker, near Niagara-on-the-Lake, was the scene of a very pretty wedding, last Wednesday afternoon. The contracting parties were Mr. Matthew H. Culp, of Jordan Station and Miss Martha M. Brooker. The groom was supported by Mr. Wallace Walker, of Beamsville, and the bride by her two sisters, Annie and Edith. The ceremony was performed by Mr. H. M. Evens, minister, (and proprietor of 'The Express'), in the presence of many friends and relatives from Toronto, St. Catharines, Smithville, Beamsville, Canfield, Jordan Station and Niagara-on-the-Lake.

The bride, was indeed handsome, and was charmingly attired in cream cashmere, trimmed with cream satin, while the bridesmaids wore blue cashmere trimmed with white silk. The groom wore a smile as he looked with pride upon her who was about to be made his life-partner, no doubt congratulating himself, which well he might, upon having secured such a prize. The presents, were both numerous and costly.

After the nuptial knot was tied, making there no more twain but one, the whole company repaired to the dining room where a table was spread which fairly creaked beneath the load of good things, making the reporters mouth water even now when he thinks of that turkey and _ cake. My! It was excellent, but I will have to stop here for - - - - -?

The rest of this very descriptive article was impossible for this author [Gary M. Culp] to read, due to the fragile, yellowed old newspaper having suffered years of indignities, by getting mouse-chewed and torn.

      Marriage Notice: CULP - JOHNSON

Taken from the Beamsville Express of August 10, 1911

A pretty home wedding was solemnized at the residence of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John H. Johnson, of North Pelham, Ont., on Wednesday afternoon, the second of Aug., when their only daughter, Ethel Florence was united in marriage to Mr. Auburn W. Culp, of Beamsville, Ont. Rev. Peter Teith of North Pelham tied the nuptial knot in the presence of a large number of the bride and groom's relatives and friends. The house was filled to its most comfortable capacity and it was most tastefully decorated for the occasion. The bride and groom were unattended. The bride carried a lovely boquet and was prettily attired in white silk. The wedding march was played by Miss Maud Johnson - the bride's cousin. Following formal ceremonies, came the noteable feature of the occasion - that of a sumptuous repast in the dining hall, where the fair sex had surpassed themselves in ladening the tables with the most delicious of everthing.     The bride and groom are both well-wknown in the Niagara District and highly esteemed by a wide circle of friends and the kindest wishes of all go out for them in their new enterprise and lovely home on Lake Ontario's delighful shore, just east of Beamsville. The very many beautiful and costly presents bear testimony of the good wishes bespoken. Mid showers of rice and confetti and old shoes, they left by train for Niagara Falls and Buffalo, N.Y.

Ira was a teamster all his life

Notes from Wayne Jackson, Great Grandson of James Ira Jackson

At one time, Ira lived 2 miles west of Victoria, Ontario. Howard Jackson thinks that Ira may not have owned this property. 1900 Ira eventually (after 1891 and probably before 1900) moved and bought a farm in Bayham Twp. Elgin Co. in Elgin Co. Road 55 (Baynor Road) just north of Glen Erie Road. His son William attended the nearby Hemlock school. He lived there when his grandchildren Ila and Howard Jackson were born in 1911 and 1915 respectively. Ira's son William built a house on this property. This is where Howard and Ila were born. The house built by William on this property was moved or tore down in [Birth Date Confidential]. At some later time, Ira worked on the first farm south of Eden. Howard Jackson is unsure if Ira owned his team.       1914 The Simcoe Land Registry shows Ira Jackson selling the family property in Normandale (or a share of the property) to his sister Nettie Post on 24 October 1914 for $600.00 Ira probably inherited part of the property when his father Daniel died in Dec. 1913. Nettie's husband, John Post, was of the local Post family. Upon their death, their only child, Ernest inherited the home. This property was eventually sold out of the family when Ernest and his wife Elizabeth died in 1979.      Howard tells story of Ira and a teamster's shack along lake or marsh. He had to remove 5 whampom (water) snakes from the reeds used as a mattress in his bed. This was a temporary shack with tar paper roof and perhaps slabs for siding. Ira worked for his son William as a Teamster, working and driving horses in a lumbering operation. Ira also worked on farms owned by William. In later years, Ira lived in a house on the left side of Hwy. 19 south of Maybees Side Road. He was on the Nathan Gray farm as a hired hand.

Alzira's grandson Howard Jackson remembers as a child visiting Alzira with his mother, Rosetta. Alzira had just suffered a stroke, and died soon after in 1925. Alzira was living at that time on the west side of Con 2 south of Lower Side Road in Houghton. The address was R.R. # 2, Clear Creek.

1871 CENSUS - Alzira Wardell age 12 is listed with her parents in the 1871 Census of Middleton Twp.

DEATH REGISTRATION - Alice Alzira Jackson, housewife, married, died 7 June 1925 Houghton Twp., Norfolk Co. Informant lists Norfolk Co. as place of birth. Parents listed were Robert Wardell, born Ontario and Charlotte Culp, born Ontario. Her physician was Dr Wildfang, Tillsonburg. Undertaker was W.C. Spragge, Port Burwell. He made his living off the shores of Port Rowan as a fisherman. When his sister Lottie and his mother Thursa moved to Simcoe to live, Dick decided he would remain in Port Rowan and live on his boat. That winter, somebody went down to the docks to see how Dick was making out. They found him in bad circumstances, as Dick was ill and very cold. They immediately contacted Lottie in Simcoe. Lottie sent her brothers down to go and pack his belongings and fetch him to Simcoe to stay with her and their mother. It is not known how willingly he went, but he was in dire straits. He knew his sister would be the head of the household, and he knew she would not allow alcohol or spirits into her household. That winter he had a severe attack of arthritis. His fingers were deformed from that winter on, in that they bowed upward.

On a Cairn at Port Rowan Lake Erie

Inner and Outer Long Point Bay Commercial Fishermen and Punters Our Oldest Heritage Dick Wardell is listed as a hoop and seine commercial fisherman with a least 20 years experience. In the early seventeen hundreds, this area was well noted for its abundance of waterfowl and fish. Punting and commercial fishing has long been a way of life in the bay and marshes of Long Point. Without motors, punting was a must. Maneuvering skiffs through the shallows of the marsh required great skill. These commercial fishermen were skillful punters, trappers and charter boat guides, fishing in the spring, guiding for bass in the summer and guiding duck hunters in the fall. This cairn is where many of the men sat awaiting the arrival of hunters and fishermen coming into the Baycliff and St. Charles hotels for bookings. This was their Life! In remembrance.
