TILMAN CULP FAMILY BURIAL GROUND
Latterly called U.E.L. Cemetery Located on Lot 10, Conc 1. Broken Front. directly behind the old school house, now a home, on west side of Tufford Road. 0. G. S. #!3388
DIELMAN KOLB (Tilman Culp) Sr. was born in 1744. at Deep Run, Pennsylvania. A Mennonite and United Empire Loyalist, he brought his wife and four children from Bucks County to Canada in the early spring of 1876 and settled in Clinton Township on this lot. which was granted to him by the Crown in 1803. Their family were Jacob. Tilman, Mary and Joseph.
Between the years 1830 and 1840. some of Tilman's grandchildren and great grandchildren joined with the newly formed Christian Disciples who had their first meetings at the Lakeshore nearby. It appears that many of the old Loyalist family members, Mennonites, Disciples and otherwise shared this small common piece of sacred ground, as their last resting place. The old burial ground may have had its beginning with the death of Tilman's wife, in the early 1800s. He was buried there in December of 1824, as were a number of other members of his family in later years. In 1857, when a deed for one half acre was given by Christopher Currey and his wife Lucy to the Trustees for School Section No. 1, the description for that land began at the "North west corner of the Burying Ground." Some of those who were very likely interred here were JACOB CULP (Flat-head Jake) born 1757, died 1863, and his wife ELIZABETH (PRICE) born 1790, died 1855. JOSEPH CULP, born in 1781, died 1826. and his wife, ELIZABETH (Tinlin) born 1802 and died 1825.
It is difficult to ascertain, when the most recent burial actually took place. It has been said that Jesse House, born 1832, who died 16 May, 1904 was the last, and that there are perhaps thirty and as many as one hundred and twenty buried here. Some were probably moved, as were the Haun/May/Walkers to Mount Osborne in the 1930s.
In the Beamsville Express of April 26, 1900. the condition of the cemetery was noted: "The little cemetery on the. farm of J. H. Wismer is looking very dilapidated, " who has no friends in that quiet plot." As recently as 1977, two stones remained there.

Obituary of FREDERICK GARFIELD CULP
Taken from the Beamsville Express of August 29, 1907, p.1
Horrible Death of Fred Culp on Sunday Morning This community was greatly shocked on Sunday morning, when the news spread rapidly of the shocking manner in which Fred Culp, son of Mr. Peter Culp, met his death. And the sympathy of the entire community was sincerely felt for the young man's parents, who have during the past week been called upon to bear a heavy share of sorrow and affliction. It is an old saying that troubles never come singly and in this case it is amply verified. On Sunday morning, about 10:50, Fred Culp attempted to board a rapidly moving G.T.R. freight train. The train was probably going faster than he had anticipated. His feet were drawn inward by the suction, and then swung out again. Then he let go, and seemed to throw himself from the train. He rolled over two or three times, when his head was brawn beneath the rails, and completely severed from his body, being carried probably fifty yards from the body. The sight was an awful one to those who witnessed it. Culp, with a number of others, was working for the cataract Power line running alongside the Grand Trunk. It is necessary to do this work when power is shut off, which accounts for the Sunday work. It was in one of his slack periods that the unfortunate young man attempted to board the freight which came along from the east at that time. The accident occurred about half a mile west of the local C.T.B. station The body was brought to J. W. Buck's undertaking establishment, where it was prepared for burial and removed to his parents' home on Sunday evening. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon to Mount Osborne cemetery, and was largely attended, Rev. S. M. Jones conducting a service at his late home. The pallbearers were some of the deceased's companions: Charles Tallman, Stanley Garbutt, Bert Vosburgh, Royal Kelter, James Tufford and Charles Luey. Many beautiful floral tributes were received, as follows: Pillow, Mr. and Mrs. A.G. Culp; wreath, his companions; sprays from Woodman Bros., G.W. Palmer, Charles Albright, Royal Kelter, Mr. and Mrs. E. Robinson, Bert Vosburgh, Barbara McArthur, Aubrey Russ, Charles and Louis Larr, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Culp and Hill Culp, Mr. and Mrs. Fred B. Hilton and Mrs. Frank Hilton.

I have among my household goods some rare old pieces as heirlooms, of these I give the metal dish to Philip, three China plates to Amelia and three China plates to Mary, and the Counterpanes to Victor. Should any of my heirs become dissatisfied with this my will, and threaten legal action to interfere with my bequests and desires, then such heir or heirs shall forfeit the portion devised to them, and it shall be divided equally among the others. The key of the Border St. house is to be held my said daughters until they removed therefrom my wearing apparel which I have divided between them. Any pledges made by me to pay any money are to be paid by my executors out of my Estate.
Any rents which may be accrued due on my several properties at the time of my decease may be applied on account of my funeral and testamentary expenses.
I desire that each of my children shall contribute equally to what may be necessary to pay the balance of my funeral expenses and to the expenses of the Monument. If there should not be sufficient in the Estates to make all shares fully equal, as I have herein devised, then I desire that those who shall be this my will receive the greater amounts shall refund sufficient to make all four shares equal, and in making such refund I desire that they shall not be required to pay more than $100.00 each year until fully paid.

SAD DROWNING ACCIDENT Much sympathy will be felt for Mr. and Mrs. Warner Culp, former residents of this district, in the loss, by drowning of their eleven-year-old-son, John, in the harbor at Port Dalhousie, on Friday evening last. Though men have been engaged dragging the harbor, the body has not yet been found. When last seen the lad was with another boy named Teezel, and they were coming towards home on the pier with an eel they had caught. The Teezel boy says Culp left him, but Teezel's story is not believed by many. Some time ago, he was playing with another boy on the pier, when his companion fell into the water. Terrified, young Teezel ran home, going right past some men he met, without telling them of the accident. Fortunately they themselves saw the drowning boy.

DIED SUDDENLY IN HALIFAX Sad news from the front comes to many anxious homes these days, but to received the news of the death of a local young soldier before he had even crossed the ocean came as a shock to the people of Beamsville and vicinity. On Saturday afternoon, Mr. Richard Culp, Clinton Township received a telegram informing him that his son, Pte. Raymond Culp, had died suddenly in Halifax on Friday, Sept 6th. Death was due to a clot of blood from the heart getting into circulation, causing instant death. Medical advice stated that this might be caused by strain or worry. A letter was received on Monday from the deceased which had been written on the day he died, and he said he was in good health. Pte Culp reported at Niagara Camp on June 6th and after a few weeks there, he left for points east. He, with a number of others, was under quarantine in Montreal for measles for a few weeks, then proceeding to Halifax. The deceased was in his 28th year and has spent his whole life in this district, he and his father having made their home at Mr. C. Poland's. ONTARIO MARRIAGE REGISTRATION - JOHN HENRY CULP, 28, bachelor of Clinton, farmer, Disciple, s/o Solomom Culp and Mary, married by licence on 27 September 1870. in Clinton, CATHERINE HIGH, 25, spinster of Clinton, Disciple, d/o Jacob High and Mary, by Rev. J. D. Benedict. Witnesses Isaac High and James B. Culp. NAC microfilm series 932 reel 2.
Note - Compulsory registration of Births, Marriages and Deaths, came into law in June 1969. Of course it took considerable time before this law was complied with. Those registrations that were sent in, started to be recorded as they arrived. They were not assigned registration numbers and they appear in random order in regard to where the marriage took place. So they are scattered throughout Series 932, Reels 1, 2, 3, and 4, with no index.
Following their marriage, John and Catharine settled on the east half of Lot ll, Concession 3, Clinton - fifty acres, which John had purchased from the heirs of the Estate of Daniel House (son of John House Sr.). A short time later, the couple moved closer to the lakeshore and settled on a portion of the east half of Lot 12, Concession 1, with the Broken Frontage, where they remained for the rest of their lives. Although John was principally a farmer, it is interesting to note that he was probably one of the first commercial producers of maraschino cherries in the area. The old building, where the cherries were processed, still stands on the north end of the old farm, overlooking Lake Ontario.
By religion, John and Catharine were active members of the 'Lakeshore' Church of Christ, at Culp Settlement. John was one of the early trustees of the Lakeshore meeting house, along with Hiram Horn.

Services at the house were conducted by J. F. RITTENHOUSE and at the church by E. S. Hallman. Text, 39:4. Their daughter, Maggie, and her husband were here from Bucks Co., Pa. Martha and her husband from Germantown, Pa., and Emma and her husband from Buffalo, N.Y.

Taken from Gospel Herald February 1910
Fretz. -- Elizabeth Hoover, widow of the late Bro. Joseph Fretz of Louth Twp., Lincoln Co., Ont., passed way at her late home, Feb. 13. Sister Fretz had been a sufferer for many years, having been confined to her home on account of her physical infirmities. Being deprived of the privileges of public worship, she was always glad for visits from her friends and enjoyed seasons of worship. Her desire was to live faithful to the will of the Lord and to go to the home prepared for His people. Her age was 77 y. 3 m. 21 d. To her family and friends she leaves the assurance that she rests in peace with the Lord, and that by the same faith they also may meet her again. Funeral services were held at the home Feb. 15, and the remains were laid to rest in the Campden burying ground.

She married DAVID GROBB 28 January 1844 in Clinton Twp., Lincoln Co., ON. (DAVID GROBB is #32.) DAVID was born 09 December 1804 in Lot 7, Con 3, Clinton Twp, Lincoln Co.. DAVID was the son of ABRAHAM GROBB and ELIZABETH FRETZ. He married ELIZABETH WISMER FRY 03 September 1828 in Clinton Twp., Lincoln Co., ON. DAVID died 03 March 1890 in Lot 3, Con 1, Clinton Twp. Lincoln Co., at age 85. His body was interred 07 March 1890 Mennonite Cem. (Moyer) Vineland.
DAVID GROBB was born on 9 December 1804 in Clinton Township, Lincoln County, Ontario in the district known as "The Twenty". The creeks were numbered starting at Niagara Falls and so this creek was the Twenty Mile Creek. His father was ABRAHAM GROBB JR. and his mother was ELIZABETH FRETZ.
DAVID GROBB was a MENNONITE and a farmer as well as a blacksmith and wagonmaker by trade.
DAVID purchased 90 acres in Clinton Township, Lincoln County. It was the east half of Lot 3 Concession 1 including the Broken Front along Lake Ontario. The Bargain and Sale Instrument was # 9806 Registered 31 July 1834. In my files are historic and modern maps showing the location. Also in my file is a copy of the Land Abstract Ledger Sheet for this land.
In 1994 this property is still being farmed, partly in fruit trees and the rest in grapes and vegetables. Robert Martin and his sons are the present owners. His father purchased the land from the executors of Susan Hunsberger Grobb's estate.
Around the 1850s the rail lines were reaching the Bothwell area in Kent County not far from Chatham, Ontario. They were offering land at bargain prices to attract settlers. DAVID GROBB applied for Crown Lands and received the following. There are historic and modern maps in my files showing the locations.
50 acres west 1/2 west side of Lot 2 Concession 6, Zone Township, Kent County, 26 February 1855. In 1994 it is still being farmed but no original buildings remain.
100 acres west 1/2 Lot 1 Concession 2, Zone Township, Kent County, 6 August 1862. It also is still being farmed in 1994.
49 acres west side Lot "C" and 5 acres Lot 7 in the Gore, Zone Township, Kent County
DAVID GROBB never lived on these properties and finally sold them all to Jacob Moyer for $ 4160. Deed dated 31 December 1865 Recorded 6 January 1866. The interesting aspect of these properties is that GEORGE AUGUSTUS SMITH from Smithville, Grimsby Township, purchased land right beside DAVID GROBB'S land at the same time. It shows the families knew each other which becomes significant later when George Smith's son JONAS married David Grobb's daughter ORPHA.
The house that DAVID GROBB built on the shore of Lake Ontario near Vineland was much enlarged later by MOSES RITTENHOUSE. However in 1994 the original part of the house is still in excellent shape and extends back from the newer part. It is owned in 1994 by Robert Martin's brother and in my files are photographs. This is the house where my grandmother ORPHA GROBB SMITH lived while growing up.
