JACOB KOLB (CULP) and his brother DIELMAN (TILLMAN) KOLB (CULP), along with several of their neighbours, formed a Conestoga Wagon caravan from their former homes in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and migrated northward, over the Allegheny Mountains to New York State, and across the mighty Niagara River probably from Fort Niagara, to early Upper Canada in the spring of 1786. These two KOLB (CULP) brothers and their families, along with those families of STAATS OVERHOLT, FREDERICK HAUN and CONRAD TUFFORD, all settled along the south shoreline of Lake Ontario, in Clinton Township.

JACOB CULP SR. and MARY (MERCY) MEYER had the following children:
i. TILMAN6 (#42482) was born in Deep Run, Bedminster Twp. Bucks Co., Pa. circa 1764.
140 ii. JOHN was born 1766
141 iii. JACOB (JAKE) was born 1768
42. MARIA (MARY)5 CULP (DIELMAN (TILMAN)4 KOLB, PETER3, DIELMAN2, HENRICH1) reference 91 (#157) was born in Deep Run, Bedminster Twp. Bucks Co., Pa. 10 September 1730. MARIA died 7 March 1810 in Clinton Twp., Lincoln Co., ON, at age 79. Her body was interred after 7 March 1810 Mennonite Cem. (Moyer) Vineland.
She married JOHANNES (JOHN) FRETZ (CANADA JOHN) 1754 in Deep Run, Bedminster Twp. Bucks Co., Pa.. (JOHANNES (JOHN) FRETZ (CANADA JOHN) is #156.) JOHANNES was born 25 March 1730 in Bedminster Twp. Bucks Co. PA. JOHANNES was the son of JOHANNES (HANS) (WEAVER JOHN) FRETZ and BARBARA MEYER. JOHANNES died 4 May 1826 in Clinton Twp., Lincoln Co., ON, at age 96. His body was interred after 4 May 1826 Mennonite Cem. (Moyer) Vineland.
John's father, John (Hans) (Weaver) Fretz Sr. purchased 230 acres of land in 1738. It was in Bedminster Township, Bucks County Pa. and located on the north side of Bedminster Road (now called Highway 113). It was between Rolling Hills Road and Deer Run Road. John (Canada) Fretz was living there when he married Mary Kolb in 1754. She was the daughter if Dielman Kolb and Judith. Dielman Kolb was leasing 150 acres in Bedminster Township on the east side of Keeler's Church Road and south of Deep Run road. It was about 2 miles from the Fretz farm and across the road from the Deep run Mennonite Meeting House and Burying Ground where John Fretz Sr. and his wife Barbara Meyer are buried. Both families belonged to this congregation and so it is easy to see how John and Mary met.
Both John (Canada) Fretz and his father-in-law Dielman Kolb. purchased land at the same time at London Ferry on the Delaware River in Tinicum Township, Bucks County, Pa. It is now known as Erwinna. John bought his 188 acres in 1761 from the London Land Company, who were one of the many land speculating firms in Pennsylvania in the early 18th century. Unfortunately all these London Land Company deeds were stored in London England and if they still exist would have to be located there. However I was able to find his precise land from a land survey made by a local historian, of all the London Land Company sales.. Both the properties of John (Canada) Fretz and Dielman Kolb extended right down to the Delaware River. In their day a muddy track ran through their properties along the edge of the river. Today it is paved and not surprisingly called the River Road.
The log cabin John (Canada) Fretz owned in 1761 was owned in 1798 by Arthur Irwin and occupied by Adem Wagner. It was described in the 1798 Direct Tax as follows.
Dwelling 20 feet by 15 feet
Log House
Other buildings Log Stable 18 feet by 12 feet.
225 acres
House Valuation $60
Total Valuation $1,710
After his father-in-law Dielman Kolb died in 1763, John (Canada) Fretz sold his property on 1 May 1764 for £700 to Abraham Van Middleswartz. This deed is found in Bucks Co. Deed Book 50 Page 471.
In looking for land purchased by John (Canada) Fretz, I soon found he had bought 154 acres and 67 perches from Jacob Stout. This was located on Tohickon Creek which runs through the northeast corner of Bedminster Township. Actually the creek forms the boundary between Bedminster and Haycock Township to the north. He paid £400 and this deed is found in Bucks Co. Deed Book 20 page 369 and was dated 8 October 1765.
The earlier history of this land is interesting in itself. 43 acres of it were granted to Abraham Vastine by Richard and Thomas Penn on behalf of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on 13 June 1744. However Abraham Vastine did not comply with the conditions of the warrant so it was transferred to Jacob Stout on 24 June 1752. Jacob had to pay £6 and 13 shillings to cover the cost of the transfer. But he also had to pay rent of half a penny per acre due annually on 1 March each year. This original patent is found in Pennsylvania Patent Book A volume 16 page 375. That is where I struck my first bit of luck to help the search.. The Patent Book referred to Survey Book C page 5 and here I found a little hand drawn sketch locating the property on Tohickon Creek. This was really good fortune as most of the deeds of that time did not contain an actual survey. Mostly they described the land in metes and bounds and this was the case with the deed to John (Canada) Fretz from Jacob Stout. However I had found earlier it was very helpful to have a computer program which would convert metes and bounds into an actual survey. I had found such a program called Deedmapper. They also supplied maps of the area so it was possible to overlay the survey over the map and try to match it to contours of a river or road. Land boundaries are so irregular in Pennsylvania because William Pen at first allowed people to go out and survey their land in any location. Naturally these men avoided rocky places and swamps to take in the best farming land, which created a patchwork quilt appearance.
John (Canada) Fretz wanted to expand his land holdings so he and Tilman Kulp purchased 120 acres from Jacob Kulp on 2 September 1767. The deed was recorded on 5 October 1767 in Bucks Co. Deed Book 12 page 11 and this land cost them £125. Both Tilman and Jacob Kulp were brothers-in-law of John (Canada) Fretz. They were the brothers of his wife Mary Kolb but they spelled their name Kulp instead of Kolb in this document. The land was described as being in Nockamixon Township which makes it seem far away from John's other land. However this is not the case as the 3 townships of Bedminster, Haycock and Nockamixon all come together at Tohickon Creek right where John (Canada) Fretz had his grist mill.. So I am sure it was adjacent to the land he bought from Jacob Stout...
Then on 1 December 1775 John (Canada) Fretz purchased two and a half acres from his brother Jacob Fretz and wife Magdalena. This brother owned land on the south side of Tohickon Creek and it was probably bought to improve the mill race. This deed is found in Bucks Co. Deed Book 18 page 134 recorded 7 March 1776.
The very next day John (Canada) Fretz sold 48 acres of his original purchase to his brother Christian Fretz Jr. for £400. This meant he made a large profit as you will remember he only paid £400 for his whole 154 acres. Of course that was 10 years earlier. Found in Bucks Co. Deed Book 18 page 136. Then on 7 May 1785 two strange transactions took place which I can't explain. I don't know which transaction came first as they are both recorded in Bucks Co. Deed Book 20 starting on page 367. So I will begin with the one on that page. Phillip Nice and his wife Elizabeth sold to John (Canada) Fretz 152 acres in Haycock Township for £1,000. As usual it covered "all the buildings, fences, improvements, ways, woods, waters, water courses, rights, hereditaments and appurtenances". This was a fairly common clause in most deeds of that era. But the unexplainable part comes when we see that on the same day John (Canada) Fretz and his wife Mary, sold back to Philip Nice only 92 acres but still for £1,000. What caused this maneuver I guess we will never know but we do know it was adjacent to the original property and mill John (Canada) Fretz purchased on Tohickon Creek. This was found in Bucks Co. Deed Book 20 page 378 dated 7 May 1785.
The grist mill purchased by John (Canada) Fretz with the first property is credited with being the first mill built in Bedminster Township, Bucks County. It was originally built by Andrew Godschalk as shown in the History of Bedminster Township published in 1976. Armed with my computerized survey, a modern road map and a map from the Bucks Historical Atlas of 1876, I started my search for the exact location of the land and mill. I began on the south side of Tohickon Creek because of the description on the original sketch in the warrant. I then drove to the north side because of the Haycock and Nockamixon descriptions in the other later deeds. But all these roads ended up at Nockamixon Lake which is now a recreational park. In fact on some of the roads the pavement ran right down into the water.
So I started to knock on doors in neighbouring houses and learned that a dam had been built on the Tohickon Creek in the 1950s. When the reservoir filled up it formed Nockamixon Lake. I located some elderly people who lived there at the time and they confirmed that the walls of both the house and mill belonging to John (Canada) Fretz had been knocked down so they would not create a hazard in the lake for boaters. The lake is about 50 feet deep in the centre. The location they indicated in the lake matched exactly to the little original sketch and to my computerized survey made from the metes and bounds description in the deed. So I finally stood on the edge of the lake and tried to picture the John Fretz grist mill and house as it would have appeared in 1765. Of assistance in visualizing these buildings is the description given in the 1798 tax records. In that year Pennsylvania imposed a Direct Tax but usually it was known as the Window Tax. They assessed people by how many panes of glass they had in their windows as well as the size of the house. By this date the mill and house were owned by Jacob Crout.
Dwelling 45 feet by 28 feet.
Stone house 2 storey
Stone and frame barn 50 feet by 28 feet.
Stone grist mill 40 feet by 28 feet.
270 acres
House valuation $750
Total valuation $4,550
The 1791 tax records for Bedminster Township, Bucks County show JOHN FRETZ farming on 225 acres assessed for taxation at $258. He had 3 horses valued at $20 total and 5 cattle valued at $15.00 total. There were no taxation records taken in 1792 and some of the 1793 records have not survived. But by 1794 we find JOHN FRETZ farming in Hilltown Township, Bucks County, on 100 acres with an assessed value of $300. He has 2 horses assessed at $24 and 5 cattle assessed at $20. This remains very much the same through the tax assessments of 1796, 1797, 1798 and 1799, the year before they all left for Canada. His son Manasseh and his brother Abraham had also purchased property in Hilltown Township.
This discovery about John Fretz moving from Bedminster Township to Hilltown Township solved the mystery of how Michael Rittenhouse met and married Dinah Fretz. Michael had come up from his birthplace in Roxborough Township, Philadelphia County to Hilltown Township, Bucks County, about 1791 or 1792. He is shown in the tax records for Hilltown assessed for 1 horse and 2 cattle but no land. He must have been boarding with someone and it could have been the Fretz family. From the Fretz Family History volume #1 we know Michael and Dinah were married on 11 June 1793 but we don't know the location. The John Fretz farm was very near the Blooming Glen Mennonite Meeting House but it was not the custom of the time to be married in the Meeting House. Most often young people were married by the pastor in a private home and unfortunately most of the pastors did not keep marriage records. Often the young people of Mennonite faith were married by the Lutheran or German Reform ministers in their churches. So we may never know the exact location of their wedding.
As mentioned in connection with the mill of John Fretz, Pennsylvania imposed a Direct Tax in 1798 but usually it was known as the Window Tax. They assessed people by how many panes of glass they had in their windows as well as the size of the house. Luckily for us the records for Hilltown have survived so we can picture the house and farm of John Fretz in 1798.

JOHN FRETZ, (CANADA JOHN), emigrated to Canada in 1800 with his wife MARY KOLB and 5 of their children. The other children stayed in Bedminster Township, Bucks County. Their oldest son Manasseh and his wife travelled with them and they had 8 children. By this time JOHN FRETZ was 70 years old but the Mennonite families already in the area needed a minister and they prevailed on him to go. He was chosen Deacon in 1801 at what was known as Moyer's Church at "The Twenty" so he became the first Deacon of the Mennonite Church in Canada. The first log building erected for a Meeting House was on the Jacob Moyer farm which was adjoining the Burying Ground. It was to be used as a school as well and Samuel Moyer was the first school teacher.
Confirming the above arrival date is a page in Deacon Philip Wismer's note book which shows the arrival in 1800 at "The Twenty". It also shows on the same list for the same time the arrival of Laurence Hipple, Abraham Grobb and Michael Rittenhouse. These three were all sons-in-law of John Fretz so it appears they all travelled together with their wives and children. Shortly after arriving in Canada John purchased 300 acres but it was not registered until 23 May 1805. Instruments # 814 and 815. Lincoln County Deed Book. It consisted of lots 5, 6 and 7 Concession 3, Clinton Township, Lincoln County.
When John's wife Mary Kolb died in 1810 he deeded the property to his 3 sons-in-law. 100 acres to MICHAEL RITTENHOUSE (wife was Dinah Fretz) Lot 5 instrument # 4024
100 acres to LAURENCE HIPPLE (wife was Sarah Fretz) Lot 6 instrument # 4026.
100 acres to ABRAHAM GROBB JR. (wife was Elizabeth Fretz) Lot 7 instrument # 4025.
Copies of all of these deeds are in my files.
JOHN FRETZ, had his house on Lot 6 which went to Laurence Hipple. In 1994 the old wooden frame house is still there although the original log house is gone. The frame house is behind the large stone house built in the mid 1800s by Hipple descendants and later Hipple descendants are still living there. The little old frame house is being used as a storage shed and is in very poor condition. It is possible to still see the tiny window by the front entrance which in a Mennonite home was there to allow the spirit of someone who had died to escape. It was called a "soul window' In my files are photographs taken in 1994 and also historic and modern maps showing the location of the property.
JOHN FRETZ, and his wife MARY KOLB are both buried in the Mennonite Burying Ground in Vineland, Ontario. Their burials are in the old original part of the cemetery which is enclosed by a stone wall. Their plots are in row S graves # 2 and 3. Photographs are in my file of the gravestones and cemetery taken in 1994.

The following was discovered by Mrs. Jennifer Haines of Jordan, Ontario, Canada.
"Fretz, Moses, age 50, in US since 8 June 1812, wife, Roxborough Twp.,Phil. Co.. farmer; his permanent residence is in Lousi (sic) Twp., Liciln Co., Upper Canada (2-7 Nove. 1812)."
This was contained in "British Aliens in the United State During the War of 1812". Genealogy Publishing Co., 1979 - Page 420, Kenneth Scott.
What he and his wife would be doing in that location at that time is definitely a big mystery which hasn't really been satisfactorily answered as yet.
Here is what PATRICIA HIGH responded to JENNIFER HAINE's query.
"I have attached a copy of all the information and references I have for Moses Fretz (1763 - 1843). I'm not sure if it will help, or just muddy the waters further, but you might find the "Deed of Bargain and Sale" to be of interest. Apparently Moses and Susanna sold their farm on the west bank of the Twenty pond (Lot 20 Con I, Louth Twp.) to Mose's brother Manassa, just 2 Y2 weeks before they turned up in the U.S., according to that list of "British Aliens in the United States During the War of 1812" that you sent. So... were they intending to move back to the States and then changed their minds again later?? Moses still had a sister, Barbara, back in Bucks County, (wife of Jacob Silvius), and it may be that Susanna still had family back there as well. Perhaps they were worried about them, with war approaching, and went back for that reason... Some things we'll never know, I guess... (The Deed also mentions that Moses originally bought that 49 1/2 acre lot from Colonel Butler's son, Thomas. - An interesting little tid-bit, I thought.)

In 1775, ABRAHAM FRETZ purchased a farm in Bedminster Township, consisting of 224 acres from Alexander Brown, who purchased it from Richard and Thomas Penn, Governors of Pennsylvania in 1758. The farm is in 1904 divided into four farms, owned and occupied as follows: Jacob F. Hockmon on the north; Levi Hockmon on the northeast; and Anthony R Fretz and Quincy A Fretz on the south-west. It is quite probable that Abraham Fretz and wife were among the early worshipers at the Mennonite Church at Deep Run and were buried there.

It is said that in the time of the Revolution, not being friendly to the war, and being loyal to the King, that he with others of the family migrated to Canada, but not liking the climate, he returned and emigrated to Western Pennsylvania, settling at Alverton in Westmoreland County, on the farm owned by the late Mrs. Agnes (Stauffer) Fox, a great grand-daughter.
About 1810, Martin Overholt made a trip to Ohio and selected land in Coshocton and Tuscarawa Counties, intending to move there - but six weeks before he and family were ready to start, "King's Evil" (cancer), came on his neck from which he bled three days and nights, causing his death. He made his will Jan. 14, 1811, which was recorded March 2, 1811. After his death his widow and all the family, excepting the daughter Anges Stauffer moved to Ohio, Dover Twp., Tuscarawa Co., where the widow, Esther, and several of the children died during an epidemic of spotted fever. There was a large family of children born to them; the youngest, Anna, born when the mother, Esther, was 55 years old.

By contesting his father's will, DAVID KULP inherited his father's 192 acre plantation. After David's death, a 60 acre piece of this estate was sold by David's heirs to Jacob K. Myers. This is probably the piece that Abraham had willed to Jacob, but which he did not receive when the will was revoked.
Orphan's Court records (File No. 6098), regarding the settlement of David's estate, show that this settlement was disputed and an audit ordered. The audit paints an interesting picture of this branch of the Kulp family. .

He married SUSANNA KOLB DETWEILER 05 December 1769. (SUSANNA KOLB DETWEILER is #22495.) SUSANNA was the daughter of JOSEPH DETWEILER and MARIA VAN SINTERN KOLB.
MARTIN RITTENHOUSE was a miller by trade and lived in Roxborough Township, Philadelphia County, Pa. He did not own any property in Roxborough Township so must have been working for someone else.
He died late in 1828 Intestate and his estate was administered by his son JACOB. The probate in the Orphan's Court in Norristown. Pa. disclosed a surprising bit of information. The petition to the Court on 20 January 1829 outlined all the heirs to the estate including sons NICHOLAS, JACOB and MARTIN. Also daughters ELIZABETH wife of Thomas Umsted, SARAH wife of Phillip Reiner and SUSAN wife of Daniel Nixon. But the surprise was that the petiton said he had another son JOSEPH who in 1793 had married MARY KNERR and they had 3 children, SUSAN, MARY and JOSEPH but about 1804 he had deserted his family and had never been heard from again. So the petition clarified the heirs who had a claim and asked that a jury be appointed by the Court to evaluate land that MARTIN RITTENHOUSE owned in Limerick township, Montgomery County, Pa.
This property contained about 106 acres and was located on the Perkiomen and Reading turnpike and bounded by lands of George Boyer, Henry Hunsicker and Jacob Printzman. By law when a possible heir was not present, the Administrators were required to place an advertisement in 2 local newspapers which in this case were The Norristown Register and The Democratic Press. The Court ordered the Sheriff to form a jury to evaluate the land, Sheriff Jones Davis had to choose "twelve free, honest and lawful men". This was called an "inquisition" and they actually viewed the land in question. The men chosen were Adam Printzman, Peter Longaker, Isaac Linerman, John Gross, Johan peterman, P. Gilbert, George Wiedner, Conrad Fryer, George Beck, George Snyder and W. Binghust. They reported the value of the land as $30 per acre. Another of their jobs was to give their opinion as to whether the land could be divided fairly among the heirs without jeopardizing the value. They advised this could not be done as there were too many heirs.
The Court in cases like this gives the Sheriff the order to sell the land at public auction after giving the "exposure and outcry" of the time and place the auction would be held. This was to be on 7 November 1829. The highest bidder was David Hartranst and he took the land for $2,751. 00.. This was affirmed by the Administrators of the estate on 16 November 1829.
There is no distribution list in the file so we can assume this amount was divided equally among the heirs. There is also no further mention of the missing JOSEPH D. RITTENHOUSE so he may have died or preferred not to appear after deserting his family 25 years earlier.
The Orphan's Court file is OR 15872 and is held by the Montgomery County Archives in Norristown, Pa.

HISTORY of the RITTENHOUSE FAMILY by Daniel K. Kolb published 1894 in Germantown, Philadelphia, Pa. This is one of the several books and pamphlets published by Daniel K. Kolb.

i. WILLIAM DETWEILER6 (#22500) was born in Germantown, Phil. Co. PA, USA.
258 ii. NICHOLAS DETWEILER was born 02 July 1774

262 vi. SARAH was born 1785
263 vii. SUSANNA was born 18 October 1786
264 viii. MARTIN DETWEILER was born 17 September 1788
80. WILLIAM5 RITTENHOUSE (SARAH4 KOLB, MARTIN3, DIELMAN2, HENRICH1) (#21754) was born in Roxborough Twp, Phil. Co., PA 1749. WILLIAM died before 15 October 1810 in Roxborough Twp, Phil. Co., PA, at age 61.
He married MARGARETHA WALCKERS 03 December 1772 in N. Goshenhoppen, Montg. Co. Pa.. (MARGARETHA WALCKERS is #22515.) MARGARETHA was the daughter of DEITRICH WALCKERS and SARAH DEHAVEN.
WILLIAM RITTENHOUSE was a Miller in Roxborough Township, Philadelphia County, Pa..He is described as such in the settling of the estate of his wife Margaretha's father, in the Montgomery County Deed Book. Also it shows he was a Miller in the Administration Papers filed by his brother NICHOLAS RITTENHOUSE on 15 October 1810.
WILLIAM RITTENHOUSE died Intestate shortly before 15 October 1810. His brother MARTIN RITTENHOUSE renounced his right to administer the estate. However another brother NICHOLAS RITTENHOUSE, also a Miller in Roxborough Township, Philadelphia County, Pa. put up a bond of $2,000 to secure the amount of inventory until the estate was settled. It appears the Court did not think this was a large enough bond as there was a second document where the amount was increased to $4,000 and secured by all three brothers, NICHOLAS, a miller, MARTIN, a husbandman (cattle herder) and SAMUEL, also a miller. I am not sure who this SAMUEL was. I have no record of a brother of that name so it could have been a cousin, son of HENRY RITTENHOUSE. They were instructed to return the inventory to the Court by 15 November 1810. This inventory amounted to $2,656.88. But $2,426.32 was comprised of "Cash in the trade of the firm of NICHOLAS and WILLIAM RITTENHOUSE. " This shows they were in business together as millers but evidently not doing too well. There was $1,903.11 of debts and funeral expenses to be paid. In the end the estate only amounted to $753.77.
There was no mention in these files of a widow. WILLIAM'S wife MARGARETHA WELKER may have predeceased him. There was also no mention of their 3 children, WILLIAM, JACOB and SARAH. So we are left with not knowing anything about the disposal of the estate.
These papers are held by the Philadelphia County Register of Wills in Philadlephia, Pa. They are File #164 Book K Page 398.

As a result of this marriage, Jacob Kappes, a widower, became the step-father of Michael Kolb's children, viz Helena, Isaac, Barbara and Gertrude.
On April 9, 1798, Anna Meyer Kolb Kappes, with one of her step-sons, Jacob Kappes, Jr. and also Isaac Kulp, Sr. (possibly a brother of Anna's first husband, Michael) conveyed three quarters of an acre of land, at Mount Bethel, for one dollar, to Owen Honsbury and Jacob Stauffer - in trust for site of a house of religious public worship; a school house; and a burial grounds, for the religious Society of Christians, commonly called Mennonists (Mennonites). Anna was the executrix and the widow of Jacob Kappes; Isaac Kolp, Sr. was the executor and Jacob Kappes, Jr. was his son. The property conveyance of 1798 was simply the legal transfer of property, which had years before been given to the Mount Bethel Mennonite Church by Jacob Kappes, a member of the congregation.

He married UNKNOWN date unknown. JACOB died 1778 in Hilltown Twp. Bucks Co. PA, at age 48. His body was interred 1778 in Blooming Glen, Mennonite Cem. PA.
REV. JACOB MEYER was the first resident pastor of the Blooming Glen Mennonite Meeting House. This is located on Blooming Glen Road just north of Highway #113 in the village of Blooming Glen, Hilltown Township, Bucks county, Pa. The area was originally called "Perkasie".
JACOB and his wife BARBARA DIERSTEIN both died in 1778 from Yellow Fever. A plague was sweeping that part of Pennsylvania and it originally started in the army camps nearby. General Washington had moved his troops back from Germantown and had his encampment just south of Blooming Glen.
JACOB and BARBARA are buried in the Blooming Glen Mennonite Cemetery in the "old section" across the road from the Meeting House. There are photographs in the file of the red fieldstone markers. They are very hard to read but they are the 33rd and 34th stones from the left of the driveway in the 13th row.
In the file is a copy of JACOB MEYER'S will dated 18 December 1777 proved 5 August 1782. Taken from Bucks County Will Book 4 Volume 1 Page 216 Will #1762. Found in L.D.S. microfilm #0172900.
JACOB MEYER conveyed in his will 105 acres to his son Jacob by his first wife (name unknown). The land was bounded by land owned by Jacob Kolb, Jacob Meyer and Lawrence Krey. Unfortunately Jacob Jr. died in 1780 probably from the same epidemic as his father and mother. His will is in the files dated 3 May 1780 proved 5 August 1782 taken from Bucks County Will Book 4 Volume 1 Page 218. Can be found in L.D.S. microfilm #0172900.
In JACOB MEYER SR's will he left the "home farm" of 211 acres to his wife BARBARA. This was the property where they had been living but she died very soon after him. There had been a stipulation in the will if she died it was to go to son MICHAEL who was their oldest son. Here again MICHAEL was dead by September 1780 so the courts were trying to sort out all these complications. This land was bounded by land owned by George Siplis, Jacob Moyer, Samuel Moyer and Thomas Matthias.
I visited this property in 1995 and walked up the old abandoned drive. The barn is in ruins but the two storey stone house is still standing. It may have been enlarged in the early 1800's but it shows as a stone house in the 1798 Direct Tax details as shown below. There are photographs in the files. The property where the house is located is on the west side of Old Bethlehem Road about 1/2 mile south of Highway #113 in Blooming Glen, Hilltown Township, Bucks County, Pa. The total 211 acres actually extended on both sides of Old Bethlehem Road. When I was able to produce a computer survey of the two parts of the property when they finally sorted out the inheritance, each piece neatly followed the line of the road. In the files are historic and modern maps showing the location as well as the computer printouts.
In 1798 Pennsylvania imposed the first DIRECT TAX which was known as the 'WINDOW TAX' as they assessed by the number of windows as well as the size of the house. The Old Log House mentioned was probably the original house of Jacob Meyer. The stone house mentioned was probably being built by one of the heirs as it shows as "unfinished and unoccupied". By the mid 1800's it shows on the Historic Map of Hilltown Township as being owned by Samuel Hendricks who owned property further down the road. The description for the Direct Tax in 1798 is as follows.
Dwelling 30 X 20 New Stone House (unfinished and unoccupied).
Other Dwellings Old Log House.
House Evaluation £95 Total £1645
Other Buildings Old Log Barn 112 acres.

She married MARTIN RITTENHOUSE 05 December 1769. (MARTIN RITTENHOUSE is #21753.) MARTIN was born 12 February 1746/47 in Roxborough Twp, Phil. Co., PA. MARTIN was the son of NICHOLAS RITTENHOUSE and SARAH KOLB. MARTIN died before 20 January 1829 in Roxborough Twp, Phil. Co., PA, at age 81.
But the surprise was that the petition said he had another son JOSEPH who in 1793 had married MARY KNERR and they had 3 children, SUSAN, MARY and JOSEPH but about 1804 he had deserted his family and had never been heard from again.
