10. DIELMAN (TILMAN)4 KOLB (PETER3, DIELMAN2, HENRICH1) (#414) was born in Kreigsheim, Palatinate, Germany 1700. DIELMAN died February 1763 in Erwinna, Tinicum Twp, Bucks Co. Pa., at age 62. His body was interred February 1763 in Erwinna Cemetery or his Farm.
He married JUDITH circa 1727 in Kreigsheim, Palatinate, Germany. (JUDITH is #415.) JUDITH was born circa 1702 in Kreigsheim, Palatinate, Germany. JUDITH died in Tinicum Twp, Bucks Co. PA, at age unknown.
DIELMAN KOLB (or TILMAN KULP) was a farmer and was a member of the Mennonite congregation at Deep Run..
DIELMAN and wife JUDITH arrived in Philadelphia 19 August 1729 on the ship "Mortonhouse." He was the son of Bishop Peter Kolb of Wolfsheim in the Palatinate, Germany. Peter Kolb never came to America. Dielman was a nephew of 5 other Kolbs who had arrived in America earlier. Jacob in 1707, Martin, Johannes and Heinrich in 1709 and finally their younger brother Dielman in 1717. A copy of the signatures of the passengers on the Mortonhouse is in my files showing DEILMAN KOLB'S signature.
It is believed Dielman and Judith lived in Lower Salford Township, Montgomery County for a period of time after they arrived. This is very probable as the uncle Jacob lived in that area.
DIELMAN leased 150 acres on 26 March 1744 in Bedminster Township, Bucks County from William Allen who was a land speculator in the area. A copy of this unregistered deed is in my files but the original is held by The Meeting House library in Harleysville, Pa. This farm is located on the east side of Keelor's Road just south of Meeting House Road, Bedminster Township, Bucks County. It is across the road from the Deep Run Mennonite Meeting House. A Mr. and Mrs. Meyer live there in a red brick house and they are the caretakers of the Meeting House grounds. They also hold the original burying records of the cemetery (not just a transcript of the tombstones). This property is still being farmed in 1994. In my files are photographs taken in 1994 and historic and modern maps showing the location.
On 19 November 1761 DIELMAN purchased 193 acres from The Pennsylvania Land Company
in London (usually known as the London Land Company). This deed was never registered. It was
not legally necessary to register a deed at that time and it was probably 40 miles to the nearest
registry office. Nobody has been able to find records of the London Land Company in Pennsylvania
so probably the only chance of finding records of these transactions would be the London Land
Company records in London, England.
The property was on the Delaware River at London Ferry which is now called Erwinna. There
are accurate surveys of the properties along the river done by Mr. Jeff Marshall, Director of the
Bucks County Conservancy. They were interested in this property as they own a historic house built
in 1820 the "Erwin Stover House". In my files are photographs of the house and barn taken in 1994.
Part of the farm is now the public Tinicum Park. Also in my files are historic and modern maps as
well as the surveys showing the location.
After DIELMAN died in 1763 his widow Judith and son Abraham sold the property to Abraham Van Middleswartz. Copy of this deed in my files is dated 13 May 1763 recorded 10 January 1771 taken from Bucks County Deed Book 13 Page 307. Also available on LDS Microfilm Reel # 0172878.
DIELMAN KOLB died intestate so the requirements of Pennsylvania law at the time meant the estate was handled by the Orphan's Court. The land was sold for £735 and this was divided among the widow and children. Copies of the following Bucks County Orphans Court records are in my files. Book 1 Pages 344, 356, 361, 384, 391 and 395. These are all designated File # 344. There are also copies of the executor's accounts and inventories and the appointment of guardians for the minor children.
In 1798 Pennsylvania imposed a DIRECT TAX which was known as the "window" or "glass" tax as they assessed value on the number of window panes as well as the size of the house. Luckily Bucks County records were preserved and they give an excellent description of the properties. They have been republished in 1994 by the Adams Apple Press of Bedminster, Pa. I can not be sure there were no changes to the house between the time Dielman died in 1763 and the date of the tax in 1798. The house and farm had been sold to Abraham Van Middleswartz who sold it to William Erwin in 1782. He is shown as the owner at the time of the tax. The description at that time is as follows.
Dwelling 34 X 20 Log House 1 Story, Outhouses none, Log Barn 30 X 20, 200 acres, House valuation £300, Total valuation £1950.
There has been much speculation as to where DIELMAN and JUDITH are buried. They probably were still members of the Mennonite Church at Deep Run as there were no Mennonite congregations at London Ferry. However they are not shown as being buried at the Deep Run Cemetery in the original burying records held by Mrs. Meyer. As these are original records and not just transcriptions of tombstones that are legible, I think we can safely assume they are not buried there.
There is always the possibility that Dielman was buried on the farm. However there is another possibility in the Erwin Family Cemetery on the west side of River Road about a mile north of the Kolb property. There are stones in this little cemetery which go back to the 1760's. In my files are photographs of this cemetery taken in 1994. Two stones are intriguing but there is very little chance they are Dielman and Judith's. One has the initials T.G.K and the other J.C.K. I have never seen a middle initial mentioned for Dielman or Judith. The first initial T is correct as Dielman was called Tilman in the deeds. Joel Alderfer, director of the Meeting House in Harleysville, and an expert on all things Mennonite, has seen these photographs and states they are just "foot stones" and could not be Dielman and Judith's tombstones. So the mystery has not been solved.

MARTIN KOLB had a farm of 22 acres at the eastern comer of Keller's Church Road and Sweet Briar Lane in Bedminster Township. At the time of his death in 1771, a number of his children were quite young. The law required that guardians be appointed by the Orphans Court to safeguard any inheritance. This applied even if there was a surviving parent. If they were over 14 years of age, they petitioned on their own behalf. If they were minor (under 14) someone else had to petition, if there was a surviving parent this is who would petition the Orphans Court. In a Petition signed by Barbara Kulp (b. 1853) and Elizabeth Kulp (b. 1755), they chose David Kulp of Bedminster Township to be their guardian. For the younger daughters, Magdalene (b. 1757), Mary (b. 1760), Susanna (b. 1762) and Nancy (b. 1765), the courts appointed Tilman Kulp, of Bedminster Township to be their guardian.

When Heinrich Funk died in 1760 he was replaced, in the office of bishop, by "Strong Isaac" Kolb of Rockhill. Isaac moved from hilly Rockhill to a flat area of Gwynedd in 1764, in the years when a new congregation was gathering at Plains.
A request in Dutch, by four leaders at Krefeld and Utrecht in Europe, was answered in Gennan on March 1, 1773, by three Mennonite Bishops- the brothers-in-law, Isaac Kolb, Andrew Ziegler and Christian Funk the younger.
ISAAC KOLB, son of Jacob Kolb, an immigrant from Europe and son-in-law of Andreas Ziegler, was a pioneer minister in the Skippack, Pa., congregation. He became the first resident minister and bishop in the Rockhill congregation, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He was ordained to the ministry in 1743 and in 1761, he was ordained a bishop. It was on his farm that Rockhill Church was built. In 1773, together with Christian Funk and Andreas Ziegler, three prominent leaders in the Franconia Conference district, they wrote a detailed report of the Mennonite churches in America.
Part of an Address at the Annual Kulp Reunion in 1931 by John D. Souder, Noted Historian of Telford, Pennsylvania. Published in 1936 by a Committee of Descendants of Dielman Kolb, Sr.
"Bishop Isaac Kolb was the son of Pioneer and Deacon Jacob Kolb of Skippack. He was the first ordained preacher of the Mennonite Congregation of Rockhill, Bucks County. Penna. The information we have in this respect concerning him is from a letter signed by him. Andreas Zeigler and Christian Funk, dated March 1. 1773. to the Brotherhood in Crefeld, Germany, in which letter he states he was ordained preacher in 1744 and "confirmed." which means to the office of Bishop. He settled in Rockhill, located in Freetown in the Manor of Perkasie.
On January 20, 1736. Jacob Kolb of Skippack sold to his son. Isaac Kolb. 150 acres of land for which Isaac paid 90 pounds. On this tract is now located the town of Telford. The deed was witnessed by Michael Zeigler and Jacob Souder. The first deed has attached the "great seal of William Penn." Two days before this transaction took place, Jacob Kolb also sold 150 acres of land to his son-in-law. Michael Derstine, husband of Agnes Kolb. These two young married couples were the first settlers in the reputed Perkasie Manor in Rockhill Township.
In 1744. Isaac Kolb was ordained a preacher, and Michael Derstine a deacon. thus becoming the first officials of the Rockhill congregation. They erected the first house of worship in 1744. It was a log church and stood on the boundary line of their several tracts. The brick church of today is the fourth house of worship on this tract. The log church stood until 1776 when an addition was built to it. This second building stood until 1838.
Preacher Isaac Kolb was ordained bishop to take the place of Bishop Heinrich Funk who had died. In 1776. Bishop Isaac Kolb died and in his stead was ordained preacher Christian Funk. son of Heinrich Funk of Franconia. Bishop Christian Funk in his "Mirror For All Mankind" mentions Bishop Isaac Kolb several times in an account concerning some difficulties in the Church. The Revolutionary War was coming on and what the trouble was he did not disclose. as Bishop Isaac Kolb died before the trouble of Funk ripened.
Bishop Isaac Kolb married Gertrude Zeigler. daughter of preacher Andreas Zeigler of Skippack. He resided on the Rockhill tract until January 16. 1764. when he sold the homestead to preacher Samuel Bechtel of Saucon. Northampton County. Pa. for 900 pounds. It was known as the "preachers' homestead." six preachers having resided on the same farm since then. It appears that Bishop Isaac Kolb's wife died and the next we hear of him is in Gwynedd Township, Philadelphia County. in the region in which Lansdale is now located. It is quite probable that he was then affiliated with "The Plain" Congregation near that place.
Abstract of will of ISAAC KOLB Dated 7 August 1772 Proved August 7th. 1776.

ISAAC KOLB (SEAL)
WITNESS: Michael Zeigler Margaret Weber Andrew Zeigler
Isaac Kolb lived on the "preachers' homestead" in Rockhill. Bucks County. from 1735-6 to 1764. when it appears his wife died. Soon after he married widow Cornelius Conrad. and moved to the Gwynedd section. Where he and his wife are buried is not known, He was an active church leader. instrumental in bringing settlers to the Rockhill community. and organizing a congregation. thus helping to make this land a "New Goshen" for his brethern.
ISAAC KOLB, was an extremely strong man, and was known as "Der Grosse Isaac" or "der sehr starke man" the very strong man. Incidents were recalled by Dr. John Overholt. "The Kulp ancestors were a strong, athletic people, some of them almost giants. It is related that Isaac Kulp (known as " Strong Isaac ") was a powerful man. It is said that when he was building a house, one day while at dinner, he was discussing with his workmen whether the cross beams could he hauled to the place with two horses, or whether four horses would he required. After dinner he walked out to where the timber lay, and shouldered it, and to the utter surprise of the workmen they saw him bearing the piece of timber on his shoulders. The fame of his strength was heralded far and wide throughout the neighborhood round about. He was a peaceably disposed man, and would not fight, though often challenged. When on a certain trip to Philadelphia, he stopped at a hotel over night, he came in contact with a bully, who challenged him to fight, which was declined, whereupon the bully branded him a coward and struck him in the face, which angered Mr. Kulp so that he grabbed the bully by both his arms near the shoulders and set him in a chair that squashed under him. When he arose from the floor both of his arms were powerless. The bully said he was satisfied with the experiment, and did not wish to fight with Kulp after that.
In 1800 two of Isaac Kolb's daughters emigarated to Canada with the large group headed by John Fretz. They were Hannah married to Mannaseh Fretz and Susanna married to Jacob Housser.

34. AGNES VAN SINTERN4 KOLB (JACOB3, DIELMAN2, HENRICH1) (#442) was born in Skippack Twp, Montg. Co., Pa. 28 October 1713. AGNES died 31 July 1776 in Rockhill Twp., Bucks Co. Pa., at age 62. Her body was interred 2 August 1776 in Rockhill Mennonite Cem. Telford, PA.
She married MICHAEL DIERSTEIN 18 January 1734 in Skippack Twp, Montg. Co., Pa.. (MICHAEL DIERSTEIN is #465.) MICHAEL was born 31 July 1712 in Palatinate Rhineland, Germany. MICHAEL was the son of SAMUEL DIERSTEIN and BARBARA. MICHAEL died 6 June 1777 in Rockhill Twp., Bucks Co. Pa., at age 64. His body was interred after 6 June 1777 in Rockhill Mennonite Cem. Telford, PA.
MICHAEL DIERSTEIN at the age of 20 arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 11 August 1732 on the ship "Samuel", Hugh Percy commanding. It came from Rotterdam via Cowes, England where they stopped for supplies and to wait for good weather. Most of the passengers on this trip came from east of the Rhine River in the Heidelberg area.
Richard K. MacMaster in his book Land, Piety and Peoplehood states MICHAEL DIERSTEIN came from HASSELBACH with a group including neighbors Christian and Benedict Gehman. He has strong evidence as he is quoting from the records of the Mennonite Commission For Foreign Needs. This was a commission set up by Mennonites in Amsterdam to assist Mennonites to escape persecution in Europe.
The cost of transportation to America at that time was about 300 guilders for a family of 2 adults and 2 children. As MICHAEL was a young man of 20 and travelling alone, his cost would have been about 75 guilders. It states in the records of the commission that MICHAEL had 30 guilders of his own but "expects the rest from his friends in America".
It is believed the DIERSTEIN ancestors came from the Bern district of Switzerland. The name in Switzerland would have been THIERSTEIN. If they were Mennonites (Anabaptists) they would have been persecuted and escaped to Rhineland, Germany where at first there was a more tolerant attitude to other religions than the state religion.
MICHAEL purchased from his father-in-law Jacob Kolb 217½ acres. This property was located on what became known as Mill Creek just west of Sellersville in Rockhill Township, Bucks County. It had originally been warranted to James Robeson Warrant # 4 on 15 January 1733. Copies are in my files along with survey from Survey Book "A" Volume 84 Page 37. The patent was issued 27 May 1735 and copy is taken from Bucks County Patent Book "A" Volume 7 Page 182.
In my files are photographs of the original stone mill built in 1742. It appears in good shape but is not actively being used. Also photographs of the large house on the property in 1994. It was built on the site of the original house but this house was built circa 1890. The farm is on Highway 152 south side just west of Sellersville. Entrance is east of the Pennsylvania North-East Turnpike Extension which along with a railway run through the original farm property.
MICHAEL later purchased 181 acres for £261 from the estate of Thomas Freame. This was located on the east branch of the Perkiomen Creek east of Sellersville but I believe it may have abutted the other land. Copy of the deed in my files is taken from Philadelphia County Deed Book "H" Page 471 dated 10 November 1763 recorded 5 December 1764.
MICHAEL was the first deacon of Rockhill Mennonite Meeting House. It was originally known as "Bechdel's" and then known as "Gehman's". It is located on Meeting House Road south of Highway # 152 and there are photographs in my files of the present Meeting House in 1994.
It shows in the records of the Franconia Meeting House that MICHAEL audited the "Alms Book" 4 times between 1767 and 1772.
MICHAEL DIERSTEIN was a very successful farmer and miller. As well as operating the large farms he ran 2 mills. These were a Grist Mill and a Saw Mill located on Mill Creek adjacent to the main house. In 1994 the property has become very run down and is not being cultivated.
A copy of Michael's original will is in my files as well as a transcript. Will is dated 28 February 1777 proved 22 January and 9 February 1782. There are also a copies of the inventory and accounts of the executors.
MICHAEL DIERSTEIN and his wife AGNES KOLB are both buried in the Rockhill Mennonite Meeting House cemetery which is located on the west side of Meeting House Road which runs south from Highway # 152 west of Sellersville. Photographs are in my file taken in 1993 of both tombstones. The inscriptions are in German but translations are in my files.
In 1798 in Pennsylvania there was a "DIRECT TAX" in most counties. It was sometimes referred to as the "Window Tax" because they assessed on the number of windows as well as the size. In the counties where the records were preserved it makes a very interesting document because of the description of the property.
In the case of MICHAEL DIERSTEIN he died in 1777 but left the house and mills to son ISAAC DIERSTEIN. The tax in 1798 would describe the house and mills as they were in Michael's time as Isaac had not done any reconstruction. So the description is as follows.
